An Association for Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) task force was charged with redesigning the association's small research grant process. One step in this process included identifying focus areas for the specialty's spirit of inquiry. Using input from a round table discussion with ANPD annual convention attendees, the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development Editorial Board, and the convention evaluation query, 10 spirit of inquiry focus areas were identified that align with the Nursing Professional Development Practice Model.

This article provides a discussion regarding best education practices in the virtual environment. The article begins with a brief definition of learning and overview of guiding principles that serve as the basis for best practices for learning with the benefit of technology. This is followed by a discussion regarding learning with the benefit of technology, instructional design principles for the online setting, technology standards, and best practices for learning with the benefit of technology.

The American Nurses Association will publish the revised Nursing Professional Development: Scope and Standards of Practice this summer. The new document focuses on outcomes, successes, change, and a global audience. This column highlights key changes within the context of nursing professional development, especially continuing nursing education.

Patient safety is one of the most critical issues for health care today. The escalating need to decrease preventable complications serves as a significant catalyst to identify and use evidence-based practice (EBP) at the bedside. Decreasing preventable complications requires a synergistic relationship between the nurses at the bedside and nursing leadership. This article presents an overview of the concepts and the specific structures and processes used at Baylor Health Care System to increase the use of EBP and improve patient safety.

Nurses' ability to practice is constantly challenged by changes in equipment, staffing, acuity, time constraints, and requirements of regulatory agencies. This article highlights an innovative approach to validate competency of registered nurses in a 380-bed hospital in the Midwest. Confronted with increasing demands to validate competency on high-priority issues, as well as in areas of high risk, educators developed a plan to verify competency by using an observed performance format. Although the specific competency was pain management, this prototype can be used for validation of other high-risk or high-profile competencies.
